3 dead in crash on FM 973 in Travis County

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Three people are dead after a crash on FM 973 in Travis County Friday evening.

Austin-Travis County EMS says around 7:51 p.m., emergency personnel responded to 7221 North FM 973. That’s near Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park and close to Manor.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Travis County Sheriff’s Office also responded. DPS says two vehicles carrying three people total collided by the Old Decker Creek Bridge.

ATCEMS says one car caught fire.

According to DPS, all three people were pronounced dead on scene. There was a male and female in one car and one male in the other.

Right now, DPS says it’s unsure of the contributing factors, but that it’s a dark roadway.

ATCEMS asks drivers to avoid the area as there are closures. The Texas Department of Transportation says FM 973 is currently closed at Decker Lake Road. Decker Lake is also closed.

DPS says closures are expected to last at least a couple more hours.

The Austin Fire Department also responded to the crash.
