More than 125 Hy-Vee stores across Iowa will each distribute between 500-1,000 cloth masks to Iowans, the grocery chain announced Monday afternoon.

Each Hy-Vee grocery store and drugstore in the state will start handing out masks at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, according to a news release from the company. They will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The masks are intended for those who have not been able to obtain a mask to help protect themselves from the coronavirus (COVID-19),” the news release said, although spokeswoman Christina Gayman said there is no eligibility requirement.

Gayman said there was no universal guideline for how stores should hand out the masks, and that decision would be left to the store directors.

The Iowa Department of Public Health partnered with HanesBrands, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control to provide the 75,000 “Hanes Defender” cloth masks.
